Strategically located on the <strong>bank of the River Arag\u00f3n<\/strong>, this municipality stretches from where this river and the <strong>Cidacos<\/strong> meet, forming meadows that have been the centre of farming here since time immemorial. Its name comes from the Romance word caput-russus, which means \u2018bright red\u2019 or \u2018red head\u2019, perhaps evoking the colour of its earth or its resilient nature.  <\/p>\n<p>Deposits of flints have been found, possibly linked to the repair of early agricultural threshing boards. Even though <strong>Roman settlements<\/strong> are not known there, the presence of tiles and vessels confirmed that there was rural life in the form of villas and river ports. The first documented reference to Caparroso is as <strong>\u2018Qabarrus\u2019 <\/strong>in Arabic chronicles in the 9th century. According to those texts, Caliph <strong>Abd-al-Rahman<\/strong> set up camp near to its castle, which together with the existing walls was the scene of its important defensive action at that time.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caparroso is a land of fertile meadows, history and traditional flavours. The Shrine Chapel of the <strong>Virgin of El Soto<\/strong>, from the 18th century, has a Latin cross layout, a large crossing and straight transept. It stands on the outskirts of the town, on the other side of the <strong>River Arag\u00f3n<\/strong>, and is the centre of some of the town\u2019s most endearing celebrations. The Parish Church of Santa Fe, built in the 17th and 18th centuries in the <strong>Gothic-Renaissance style<\/strong>, has a restrained structural elegance with a Latin cross layout and starred vaults.   <\/p>\n<p>Caparroso is a <strong>culinary gem<\/strong>: asparagus, artichokes, peppers and tomatoes are the star products of its market gardens.
