The Basque language was widely used in Gar\u00ednoain until the early 19th century, as can be seen from the place names and documents of that time. <\/p>\n<p>The municipality is home to the <strong>Cabo de Armer\u00eda Palace<\/strong>, that was the seat of people holding the armoury corporal title, linked to old noble families; there are still references to the castle demolished in the 19th century to build the church that stands there today. As regards the religious heritage, special mention should be made of the <strong>Church of San Mart\u00edn<\/strong>, the shrine <strong>chapels of the Virgen Blanca<\/strong> (with a <strong>Romanesque<\/strong> apse and image from the 12th century), of <strong>Santa Cecilia <\/strong>(on a circular fort), of <strong>San Clemente <\/strong>(now converted into housing), and of <strong>Santo Cristo de Catal\u00e1in<\/strong>. The 330 hectares of common land continue to be essential in the local economy, along with small glasshouses to grow horticultural crops. Despite the wildfire in 2016, which affected much of the municipal district, the gall oak and holm oak groves continue to be of ecological value.  <\/p>\n<p>The town holds its patron saint\u2019s festivities to honour the <strong>White Virgin<\/strong> on the weekend closest to 8 September, with music, Basque pelota matches, communal meals and games for all. The <strong>pilgrimage tradition<\/strong> is going strong: the <strong>Muga (Border) Day<\/strong> (1 May), the<strong> pilgrimage to the Shrine Chapel of Santa Cecilia<\/strong> in June, and the <strong>festivity of the Holy Cross<\/strong> at the Shrine Chapel of Catal\u00e1in on 14 September, followed by novena prayers.
