The small town, which prides itself on its peace and quiet, now bears witness to the steady stream of pilgrims on their first stage along the <strong>Way of St. James<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Gothic Parish Church of La Asunci\u00f3n<\/strong>, built in the 13th century and with subsequent additions from the 14th, 16th and 18th centuries, rises up over its alleyways. The high altarpiece is <strong>Plateresque<\/strong> (16th century). There are altarpieces dedicated to <strong>St. John the Baptist<\/strong> (c. 16000) and to the Virgin and Child (<strong>Romanesque<\/strong>) in the side chapels.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The southern side of the church is enclosed by a <strong>Renaissance<\/strong> gallery which has two rounded arches from the 16th century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The old charter town of Legarda lies at the foot of the Sierra del Perd\u00f3n foothills.
