The view of its bridge, which is its namesake, over this river is one of the best known landmarks along the <strong>Way of St. James<\/strong>. Legend merges with history to date the construction of the bridge in the 11th century at the behest of Muniadona (\u2018Mayor\u2019) of Castille, Queen of Navarre to make it easier for the pilgrims to cross the river. The chapel in the middle was home to the image of the <strong>Virgin of the Txori<\/strong> (bird in Basque), whose tradition has it washed the face of Our Lady with river water that it carried in its beak, and which today is in the safekeeping of the <strong>Church of San Pedro<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Puente la Reina grew up around the Way of St. James and the River Arga.
