Mendigorria is a hilltop town, protected by the River Arga

The tall Baroque tower of the imposing Church of San Pedro dominates the town’s skyline. Legend has it that it was built with wine mixed in its mortar. That was not the case, but the construction of the church was paid for with the fine wine that this fertile red soil of clay and sandstone produces.

The Renaissance Gothic church boasts one of the key works of the Navarrese Romanesque, its high altarpiece and other beautiful items such as the pews and Rococo organ.

At the top of the charter town, visitors can enjoy the magnificent views over the rolling landscape of Central Navarre from the Church of St. Mary, as well as delighting at the Flemish reliefs on its high altarpiece.

As you make your way down its streets, you will come across beautiful mansions from the 15th to 19th centuries, emblazoned with Baroque coats-of-arms and the odd one built using the remains of the city walls’ towers.

Crossing the River Arga over the Roman bridge will bring you to the Roman city of Andelos, one of the most emblematic archaeological sites of Navarre. Urban structures, homes and a complete water supply system remain of Andelos, populated since the 1st century B.C.
