Quintessentially rural and streets brimming with history

Murillo el Cuende is a municipality in Navarre made up of three council districts: Murillo el Cuende, Rada and Traibuenas, each with its own identity and history intertwined with the development of the territory.

Geographically speaking, the municipal district is crossed by the Cidacos and Aragón rivers and has areas of natural interest, such as the Rada Lagoon and around the Rada Viejo uninhabited town, from where spectacular views can be enjoyed towards the Bardenas Reales badlands and the Sierra de Ujué/Uxue mountain range. The countryside is a patchwork of river terraces, arable land and clumps of Mediterranean vegetation.

Historically, Murillo el Cuende and its council districts were linked to ecclesiastical and noble seigniories. Rada Viejo, for example, was an important medieval defensive position, with a castle, church and walled precinct, which was razed during the Navarrese civil war in the 15th century. The current council district of Rada was created in 1972, and Traibuenas, which became part of the municipality in 1845, also has traces of its noble past.

The monuments open to the public include the Church of the Santa Fe in Murillo el Cuende (16th-18th century), the medieval chapel of the Santa Cruz, the Church of San Juan Bautista and the Cabo de Armería Palace, that was the seat of people holding the armoury corporal title in Traibuenas, and the Parish Church of Santa Cruz in Rada. The uninhabited town of Rada Viejo with its castle, fortified tower, Church of San Nicólas and burial ground is an archaeological site of great value.

The economy is based on agriculture and livestock production, where cereals and vines are grown along with livestock farms, particularly in Rada, where solar farms and a company making electromagnetic components have been set up. Traibuenas is known for wine-making and the grain dryer.

Traditions are kept alive through the patron saint’s festivities: St. Isidore (15 May) and the Holy Faith (end of August) in Murillo el Cuende; St. John in Traibuenas; and St. Bernard and the Virgin of the Rosary in Rada, with pilgrimages, bull runs, communal meals and activities bolstering community ties.
