A privileged location for observing nature
Pitillas, which is closely linked to the lagoon of the same name, nestles in the foothills of the Sierra de Ujué mountain range.
The closed-basin lagoon is supplied by water flowing down from those mountains. It is Navarre’s most important wetland given the diversity of migratory species that winter there thanks to its wealth of invertebrates. A large variety of birds nest there and it is considered one of the areas with the greatest concentration of birds in the whole of the north of the Iberian Peninsula. It was declared a
Pitillas showcases the lagoon on Water Day as a prime resource in terms of water management and use.
The church was built in 1568. It has a Christ Crucified and the Virgin Mary on each of its sides.
The town centre is a gem with striking emblazoned houses built out of stone from its famed quarries, whose industrial exploitation was an economic and social revolution for the municipality. They include the Bishop’s House, the Town Hall and Arraiza House.
The Church of San Pedro Apóstol, built in a Late Renaissance style in around 1600. The tower and portal were added some years later. It is home to some interesting altarpieces.
