A quiet municipality on the Way to St. James

This quiet town nestles in the foothills of the Sierra del Perdón mountains, next to the River Robo, and which the Way to St. James runs through at a leisurely pace.

It is on an open and windy gentle foothill, where ‘cereals, plentiful vines and the odd olive trees’ have been grown since ancient times, and where ‘the fallow land is scarce but good grazing for livestock’.

Its farmsteads are grouped around the Parish Church of San Andrés Apóstol, a Gothic building with two Romanesque altarpieces, the work of Martín de Echeverría from around the 1630s.

The high altarpiece depicts scenes of the Passion of Christ and is decorated with effigies of different saints, including the church’s namesake. The other altarpiece focuses on the Virgin with Child and describes episodes of their life. The Shrine Chapel of San Cristóbal stands on the outskirts and there is a pilgrimage there every 10 July.

Its patron saint’s festivities are celebrated on the Sunday before 15 August.
Its traditions include the pilgrimage to the Church of Santa Maria de Eunate on 1 May.
