Añorbe - Navarra Media

Añorbe stands on a gentle slope, on a hillock overlooking the Nekeas, a valley of incomparable beauty. Incidentally, Navarre’s geographical centre is in this municipality.

The Parish Church of Nuesta Señora de la Asunción looms above the hamlet and welcomes visitors to Añorbe. Even though only the side chapels, some features under the vaulting and the prismatic tower of the original church still remain, the current building is from 1853 and is home to several treasures, such as the choir stalls with fifteen ceremonial seats with a lectern from 1597 and the work of Pedro Moret, the medieval baptismal font, the late-Gothic stone tabernacle, and a neoclassical organ built in 1830.

There are other examples of religious architecture in the uplands, including the shrine chapels of San Martín, of San Juan Bautista and of San Esteban.

The ‘Stonecutter’s House’ is in the main street opposite the Church. It has a large two-storey masonry façade that is in the style of the typical models of the 17th century and recalls the noble origins of the charter town.

Its lesser-known heritage also includes some items of interest. Such as an ice-house dating back to 1668 and many springs welling up at different spots thanks to the many water sources that irrigate the area.

Many archaeological remains of great importance within the Navarrese archaeological scene are scattered over the surrounding countryside. They include the Gazteluzahar Settlement, Standing Stone and La Mina Dolmen.

Its patron saint’s festivities are celebrated on 15 August. Its traditions include several pilgrimages to the shrine chapels of San Juan on 15 May and 24 June, of San Esteban on 3 September and of San Martin of 11 November.
