Pueyo / Puiu

Pueyo/Puiu, in the heart of Valdorba, is a small Navarrese town clinging to a hill.

A quintessential snapshot of Central Navarre and the perfect portrayal of rural life in this zone.

Its history dates back to time immemorial and there are even traces of a pre-historical legacy close to the Shrine Chapel of San Cruz or San Quirico.

The emergence of ghost towns nearby, such as Ariamain, Villanueva or Villava, and Oibar de Yuso, has been documented down through the centuries.

The town’s history is the subject of a book by Ricardo Urrizola Hualde, which describes its chronicles, customs, disputes and neighbourhood anecdotes.

Stroll through its cobbled streets and discover its heritage, including the medieval Church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, with later renovations, and which boasts a Baroque altarpiece.

There are several shrine chapels: the one to Santiago, located on the highest point of the town, and those to San Quirico and Santa Julieta. A nearby medieval bridge, made out of masonry with two arches – one rounded and the other pointed – crosses the River Cidacos.
